Oragami

For the origami Test I used pepakura to unfold a simple 3D file I created using rhino. After pepakura unfolded the model into a vector format, I brought the file into photoshop and then illustrator to create and match textures onto the faces.

I modeled a small version of an OLPC laptop that I thought would be a nice gift to give away to people donating money to our Project Rwanda Fundraiser.

CNC Router Project- Japanese Joints

For this project I wanted to try and push the boundaries of CNC jointery. Typically there is a specific aesthetic that is given to furniture or projects made with the router. Mainly the restriction comes from the 3 Axis limitation of milling into the stock, but also the restriction of the round router bit filleting every corner.

For this project I made 3 cuts that involved registering the stock on the table -> making a cut -> and then rotating -> and re-registering the stock for the next cut. I was able to do a large dovetail joint and also a custom lap joint.

 

Also part of my CNC testing early on was how to do 2-sided milling. My first attempt (referenced below) did not work because I made the mistake of not centering my virtual file in the center of my virtual stock. Therefore When I attempted to flip the actual material, the cut passed too deep through the material

3D Image ‘Scanning’ Test

This was testing the 1-2-3 Catch photo merging software. I feel that I did a pretty good job at taking the images in series to produce a nice rotating series of images. But unfortunately it that my effort did not payoff in the testing.

Bat Sonar:

I first wanted to reference some of the more natural types of 3D scanning. This being the sonar system that bats use. The bats are using specific frequencies which send high pitch sound waves outwards and wait for receiving the echo. The interesting fact is that the frequencies that bats send and receive are so frequent and complicated, much more complicated than the brain should be able to process. But science theorizes that the bats are able to slow down the processing of the wavelengths to understand the patterns specifically.

 

 

Multi-Kinect Scanning:

Secondly is a project I worked on last semester with Jonathan Armistead. Below is posted a video of the system we used to do full body scans. The scanner was developed for “professional” use in a medical facility. But in actuality the scanning system is utilizing multiple kinect cameras. The system is impressive because important to the system was that all 8 kinects would grab and record point cloud data at the same exact time. The system then outputs 4 separate point clouds.

In terms of process, I was hired by Jonathan to help align the point clouds using meshlabs to align the multiple scans. The workflow involves taking multiple pieces of the scan, rotating pieces into near perfect alignment, and then having the computer guess and rotate the pieces the rest of the way. (overall a very tedious process). Afterwards the aligned point cloud models are converted into a mesh for further processing.

Positives:

~high resolution scans of full figures

~textures which semi match the figures

Negatives:

~tedious alignment of scans

~bubbling of skin texture?

~immense time spent: scanning, aligning, and reworking smoothly

 

3D printing

This post contains two 3D printing projects I did/theorized doing. My first 3D print is fairly straight forward, I wanted to test the capabilities of 3D scanning and 3D printing. This project entailed using the DAISY labs 3D scanner,  cleaning in Zbrush, and printing with the abs plastics printer.

My second project I did not print (for financial reasons) but I was thinking about ‘craft.’ I really love the american archetype of a husband needing to be a provider of craft skills and home improvement. The true source of DIY culture, a home provider having the ability to fix anything that is provided. For this project decided to model and print a bird house as a stepping stone to the 3D printing world. The idea being that in the DIY realm the first project is the bird house carpentry, and later stepping to the dog house carpentry. Therefore by 3D printing a birdhouse I wanted to ‘mis-translate’ the building of the basic birdhouse.
