Ephemeral Existence started as a simple investigation into the nostalgic world of analog audio recording. As investigation continued, it became apparent that there is a powerful relationship between humanity and unique physical objects that share the same vulnerabilities. Something becomes more treasured when it is not immediately replaceable. This observation became the central concept of this project, and sought to discover what the temporary nature of our existence reflected in our behaviors.

Edison wax cylinders became the focus due to their delicate construction and specific frequency ranges. If tuned properly, it would be able to become a piece of hardware very specific to the content it was to record.
The hardware deploys the use of modern electronics and foil recording technology together, to manifest the experience of our present with our past.
The physical form of the sound waves can be seen as a visual pattern on the surface of the foil above.

Fleeting Desperation gathers information regarding fresh water reserves on the west coast (specifically California). Heavy river control and population increase have stretched the capabilities of the the region to sustain life. Year by year the data is reflected by scratching on the back side of the artifact. As the water continues to deplete, the scratching grows slower and slower.
Every day in the United States there exists a conflict between motorists and cyclists on the road. Although Share the Road campaigns have become more commonplace, many motorists still don’t see cycling as a road- legal endeavor. Conflict capture seeks to document and explore the nature of human reaction to being behind cyclists in traffic. Awareness of this conflict becomes more important every day with many people choosing bicycles as an alternate form of transportation.
The hidden camera takes discrete photographs of motorists in their vehicles as they come in range of the device. A small on board computer takes the photos and pushes them to the web in real time. The device is powered by a Raspberry Pi, Bleduino micro controller, and a Sharp long range infrared range finder.

This tree invites people closer with a natural serenity and ambience, but explores a unique condition of human interaction. At close proximity, the curious nature of the tree invites tactility and intervention. However, upon intervention, the ambience becomes disrupted with loud connotations.
This project explores human intervention in a natural landscape and places it in a clear audible expression. Today’s world is dense with invasive interactions, creating a damaging atmosphere to natural and social ecologies. This project provides a reflection about the nature of sensory overload, specifically as it relates to human curiosity.
