“The Widow” conveys a scene set in the distant future in which humans must adapt to survive in the harsh polluted world. At birth, these future humans are fitted with neural receptive spider limbs that aid them in crossing rough terrain unharmed. But like these physical adaptions, the future humans are also mentally superior, so much so that younger people are starting to fully understand their startling reality, and suicide is becoming more and more common in younger children. “The Widow” showcases a typical future suicide case in which this young girl attempted to dig her spider limbs out of her back in order to feel the freedom of walking unaided at least once before passing.

“Melting of the Minds” features a conversation between a mentally unstable man and his eight year old daughter. For this piece, I chose to focus more on the internal elements of the characters rather than on their obvious external features (ex. flowers representing the daughter, or tethers indicative of a strait jacket for the father); instead, I chose what I thought to be a good display of their internal structures.

The daughter’s egg-shaped chair was made to symbolize her youth and purity along with her withholding of judgement of her father’s condition. On the other hand, the father’s chair was created using more broken lines and cage-like elements, showing how even though his body is bound, the father’s mind is free (shown by some of the loose spinal elements holding the chair together).

The pictures above tell a story within itself of a reunion between the father and the daughter.

“Melting of the Minds” features a conversation between an erratic psychotic man bestowing  wisdom upon his eight year old daughter. The designs for the chairs focused more on their underlying aspects and similarities as a family rather than their individual characteristics.

The young girl’s chair is painted white and shaped like an egg to represent her innocence and purity; while the father’s chair features more broken lines and elements of being, in a sense, cracked.

The location for this piece was chosen because of its clean and polished looking aesthetic. The surfaces of the walls were selected to highlight the clean lines of the chair as well as provide sort of a “sanitarium” feel.

“Project: O2” showcases a hypothetical world in the year 2098 where urbanization has taken over. Throughout the years, the rain forest has slowly been destroyed and natural environments have been obliterated by man. But despite this grim future, there have been steps taken to resist the environmental destruction–laboratories like the one show above have been created to produce artificial trees that yield a fresh supply of synthetic air.

The darker lab walls were used to show contrast to the clear, hopeful (and partially-rusted) tree, and the dead looking leaves were used to really highlight the bleak situation the fictional world is enduring. The clear, sleek acrylic was used to give the laboratory and the man-made tree a futuristic look. Overall, this piece contains 199 pieces, including both acrylic parts and paper leaves. This seemingly incomplete number was chosen specifically to show how progress in the fictional world is being made; however, there is still some way to go before the world becomes, in a sense, whole again.

This work is a multi-dimensional, decoration piece that was created using paper laser cut into straight edges. The paper was then arranged, layered, and glued to look like a spiral. To give it more of a decorative feel, the work was mounted in a black border which served both to frame the piece and to draw out contrast.

This project features an intricate, sculptural lamp that makes use of many overlapping wood pieces. The wood shapes were individually cut using a laser cutter and were then fastened together around a light bulb. In order to achieve the globular shape of the lamp, the wood was bent and then arranged to create a sphere.

This project is an organic-shaped sculpture consisting of fitted, laser-cut pieces of wood. Although this work does not appear to be created in likeness of any notable object, it was created using an algorithm called the “Rib Script,” which is a formula that produces individual wavy planes. The planes created by the Rib Script were then fitted together through slits cut in the wood.
