“Duchamp Reloaded” by Ji Lee (2009)
Marcel Duchamp was well know for taking found artifacts from the world and placing them in a gallery format. These series of interventions seeks to accomplish the reciprocal. These are fabricated objects that would normally be places in a gallery, but instead are placed throughout various streetscapes. The strong point of this work is that it takes normally benign and ubiquitous items (such as bike racks) and places them in the spotlight. This type of experience can change the very nature of an experienced street or urban hardscape. All of these things play roles of various importance to different people, but interventions such as these bring a unifying level of intrigue to nodes in the urban framework. |
