{"id":3669,"date":"2015-01-23T05:55:43","date_gmt":"2015-01-23T05:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/teach.alimomeni.net\/2015spring1\/?p=3669"},"modified":"2015-01-23T05:55:43","modified_gmt":"2015-01-23T05:55:43","slug":"ca-forbes-morewood-crosswalk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teach.alimomeni.net\/2015spring1\/ca-forbes-morewood-crosswalk\/","title":{"rendered":"Contextual Analysis: The Forbes and Morewood Crosswalk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of the most trafficked areas of campus is the Forbes and Morewood Crosswalk. \u00a0It has iconic symbols that everyone on campus can recognize and is the place you&#8217;ll most likely see a number of friends in passing. \u00a0As some people cross the street hundreds of times a year, it would\u00a0be a perfect place for an intervention.<\/p>\n<h2>Physical Qualities<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Wide open<\/li>\n<li>Plenty of viewing angles from people traveling in any direction<\/li>\n<li>The transportation hub to campus<\/li>\n<li>A number of bus stops<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s a three-way intersection as apposed to a four-way<\/li>\n<li>It can be viewed from some dorm buildings<\/li>\n<li>Can be viewed from the cut<\/li>\n<li>It has a crosswalk button with dedicated signs<\/li>\n<li>The traffic lights work on a system that ignores a direction when there is no traffic<\/li>\n<li>Many people drive through the\u00a0area<\/li>\n<li>It is on a slope<\/li>\n<li>It has the notorious &#8220;Beep Boop&#8221; crosswalk sound indicators<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;Beep Boop&#8221; changes tone with the weather<\/li>\n<li>The area has a number of light posts<\/li>\n<li>The road has dedicated turn lanes<\/li>\n<li>Very close to a number of Greek Houses on campus<\/li>\n<li>Areas of the UC have a good vantage point to the crosswalk<\/li>\n<li>Infrastructure around the crosswalk feels old<\/li>\n<li>Some concrete is cracked<\/li>\n<li>The trees around the crosswalk are very beautiful around fall<\/li>\n<li>Buses have shoulders to pull into<\/li>\n<li>A clear view of the Cathedral of Learning from the campus side<\/li>\n<li>The dorm side is shaded by trees while the campus side is not<\/li>\n<li>Sidewalk and road heavily salted during the winter months<\/li>\n<li>There aren&#8217;t many markings to show CMU pride<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Social Qualities<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>A place where the majority of the campus passes<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;Beep Boop&#8221; is part of campus culture<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;Beep Boop&#8221; has a deeper, sadder tone when it rains<\/li>\n<li>Many, MANY people don&#8217;t obey the walk signs and Jaywalk<\/li>\n<li>Most CMU students understand the way the traffic light works, and can exploit lulls in traffic<\/li>\n<li>People can forget to press the crosswalk button, forcing people to wait another light cycle<\/li>\n<li>Most students would prefer to not have to deal with the crosswalk<\/li>\n<li>Bikers wait on the side walk to cross the street<\/li>\n<li>A place where you can see many friends<\/li>\n<li>People walk in large packs as they all move in one direction<\/li>\n<li>Around peek times, hundreds of students could be waiting to cross<\/li>\n<li>When waiting for a bus, you tend to see 10 pass in the other direction before yours arrives<\/li>\n<li>Some buses will park in the shoulder and can sometimes wait a half hour<\/li>\n<li>The campus side can reflect work and stress<\/li>\n<li>The other side can represent freedom and fun<\/li>\n<li>Some people try to have conversations across the street with sign language when waiting to cross<\/li>\n<li>Traffic really picks up in the evening<\/li>\n<li>Crossing the street at absurdly late times is very fun because there is no traffic<\/li>\n<li>An interesting dichotomy between pedestrians and vehicles<\/li>\n<li>Vehicles tend to own the road, but the students own that crosswalk<\/li>\n<li>Students have stopped traffic by crossing in a large mass when they weren&#8217;t supposed to<\/li>\n<li>Pittsburgh marathon runs on Forbes and turns down Morewood<\/li>\n<li>There have been discussions to remove the crosswalk and put a pedestrian bridge<\/li>\n<li>Drivers usually hate driving through the intersection as it usually is a trap for traffic at peak times<\/li>\n<li>Students, faculty, staff, visitors must interact with it in one shape or form<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6>Feature Image Source:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thetartan.org\/2009\/2\/2\/news\/changes\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/thetartan.org\/2009\/2\/2\/news\/changes<\/a><\/h6>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
