{"id":3620,"date":"2015-01-23T02:43:47","date_gmt":"2015-01-23T02:43:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/teach.alimomeni.net\/2015spring1\/?p=3620"},"modified":"2015-01-23T02:43:47","modified_gmt":"2015-01-23T02:43:47","slug":"context-analysis-port-authority-buses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teach.alimomeni.net\/2015spring1\/context-analysis-port-authority-buses\/","title":{"rendered":"Context Analysis: Port Authority Buses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An analysis of the physical and social characteristics of the public buses that run through Pittsburgh, and which I rely on slightly too much.<\/p>\n<p>Physical Attributes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seats facing each other in the front of the buses<\/li>\n<li>Many have a raised back area<\/li>\n<li>Buses are single-decker<\/li>\n<li>Some bend at the middle<\/li>\n<li>Buses can kneel to admit disabled passengers<\/li>\n<li>Commuters pay when getting on in the bus is headed towards the city, else they pay when getting off<\/li>\n<li>Each bus has a route number<\/li>\n<li>Walking down an accelerating or decelerating bus is difficult<\/li>\n<li>Driver has a mirror facing the cabin<\/li>\n<li>Driver relies on a GPS<\/li>\n<li>No Smoking<\/li>\n<li>No Food or Drink<\/li>\n<li>Bus population is highly variable<\/li>\n<li>Highly unreliable time-wise<\/li>\n<li>People pay by a variety of methods<\/li>\n<li>If a bus is ahead of schedule, the driver has to wait at a stop until they are back on time<\/li>\n<li>Objects may be brought onto the bus so long as they do not obstruct the walkway<\/li>\n<li>Pull a yellow string to request a stop<\/li>\n<li>Buses are slow to accelerate and decelerate<\/li>\n<li>Often have advertisements on the inside<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes have advertisements on the outside<\/li>\n<li>There is an area next toe the door where you are not supposed to stand<\/li>\n<li>Buses run less frequently on the weekend<\/li>\n<li>Chairs hard but not uncomfortable<\/li>\n<li>Stop buttons on the poles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Social Attributes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Relied on by many students and professionals<\/li>\n<li>Large percentage of users are black<\/li>\n<li>Character of the drivers are very various, and have an effect on the atmosphere of the bus<\/li>\n<li>Most socialising happens near the front of the bus<\/li>\n<li>Some people talk to the drivers<\/li>\n<li>A good atmosphere in a bus requires only a small group of people to be taking<\/li>\n<li>If people talk, others listen<\/li>\n<li>Some choose to disengage with the environment via headphones<\/li>\n<li>Buses contain people from all walks of life in Pittsburgh<\/li>\n<li>There are small children in this city who know the bus routes better than I do<\/li>\n<li>Buses provide an excellent stop in which to watch others<\/li>\n<li>When on unfamiliar routes, people disengage to focus on navigation<\/li>\n<li>The length of your transit is heavily dependent on when you want to get off<\/li>\n<li>riding the bus for only a short period of time is viewed as wasting others&#8217; time<\/li>\n<li>Drivers will smoke in the bus when when on the way to a garage<\/li>\n<li>Waiting at a bus stop often involves a curve of hope and disappointment whenever a bus what is not yours appears in the distance<\/li>\n<li>People sometimes get sick on the bus<\/li>\n<li>Buses have special privileges on the streets<\/li>\n<li>Most drivers are black<\/li>\n<li>There are very few clear instructions for first-time users of the bus system<\/li>\n<li>The interior of a bus feel safe at night or in bad weather<\/li>\n<li>Socializing is not more common in very crowded buses<\/li>\n<li>Standing in the area where there are chairs facing you on either side makes you a focus of attention in the bus<\/li>\n<li>People sometimes do personal things on the buses i.e. adjust their hair<\/li>\n<li>Older people are more likely to talk on the bus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An analysis of the physical and social characteristics of the public buses that run through Pittsburgh, and which I rely on slightly too much.
